Trigonometry ~ DLO

This week I have been working on trigonometry during maths time. Trigonometry is a great challenge for me and I have really enjoyed working with Mr Wood. Trigonometry was fun to learn and it made me look forward to maths time. I had to make a DLO to prove I understood it and knew what I was doing and I was going to present in assembly but we ran out of time.  Here is my DLO on how to do trigonometry.

We are  part of an experiment to see how connected New Zealanders are. We have to write a letter to a New Zealander of our choice. The we have to pass the letter on to a random person with the instruction to pass it onto someone who might know the person the letter is addressed too.  I have chosen the black sticks captain Sophie Pascoe as my curious New Zealander because she has been to the olympics. I am going to give my letter to the my friend Ricky Lee and hoping she will pass it on .
Sophie Frances Pascoe is a New Zealand para-swimmer. She has represented New Zealand at three Summer Paralympic Games from 2008, winning a total of nine gold medals and six silver medals, making her New Zealand's most successful Paralympian.

Boat Challange

Today we had to build a boat that holds the most possible marbels, using a piece of aluminium foil. We had to  build two boats and will try to improve your design between the first and the second.
Rules
You may only use a single piece of foil to build your boat
You may not touch or adjust your boat once it is in the water
You must add one marble at a time

Review Attempt 1
We got 23 marbles on our boat. I think the boat sunk because the weight of the marbles put pressure on the foil and made it sink. Next time I would make the foil thicker and make the boat bigger so you can spreed the weight more. The other boats I think were to small and the weight was not spreed out so I think that's why they sunk. The ideas that worked were having the weight spreed out and having the marbles below the water worked too.

Attempt 2
We continued to make dips so the marbles don't move and and the weight will be split between the gaps. The strength would be the weight would be evened out. The weakness could be it rips and the marbles fall out. This time we got 27 marbles. It got too heavy to hold the marbles  up using foil.

My favourite part of this activity was working with other people outside of my comfort zone and coming up with boat ideas. I think we did this because computers have to change and evolve all the time and make the computers better and they have to solve problems all the time.

Here is our design and plan

Marble Run

Today we had to do the marble run. We had a meter of tape  and two newspapers to use as well. We had to create a ramp. We had to put the marble in the top and let it run until the friction on the carpet stops the marble or the energy in the marble runs out. We also did this yesterday.  The aim was to hit the bottle or get close to get points. Here is a video of today attempt

Yesterday Mr Wood said I will write a speech to enter the rotary speech competition. I said no but he made me, I really don't want to do it but I will anyway. the topic is the grey main way. I have chosen to base mine on discovering a love for learning and Sophie Pascoe. My speech is coming along and I only have one week to do it. I am really nervous bout specking in front of other people. It will be a good challenge and I will try my best.

Weekly Reflection ~ T1 W9

This week we have been doing lots
I went to Canterbury to compete in breaststroke 50m. I got 2nd in my heat and 15th overall out of 45. I think I did got because it was my first  time going. It was hard because of the diving block .

We had to make a learning map. First we had to put our name into the middle. Then we write people around our name that are  important to us. Who helps me learn and tools that help me with my learning. Then we had to write a change priority is here is mine ~

I want to be extended in my maths, I will do this by doing year 9-10 maths and write down examples in my maths book. In the middle of term 2 Mr Wood will check with me how my goal is going.

For tech this week we had to create a house that would stand the weather. It was hard to come up with an idea because I didn't know a lot about. I had to find out about it and come up with an idea. Mine was a house that can go up and down. So if it was flooding it could go up and if it was windy it could go down.

Weekly Reflection ~ T1 W8

This week I have been busy!!!
I qualified for West Coast Swimming and competed on Wednesday. I did good and I got some personal bests as well. It was a great day out to see so many people try their best.

For maths we have been doing financial literacy as Mr Wood introduced us to banqer and he wanted use to do a presentation on lending ad debt.I love my presentation and I think it was a fun thing to do to start off the week.

We have also been reading FROGS and we had to complete a compare and contrast on it comparing it to a short video we watched. I think Mr Wood used ugly colors so I changed it and the font. I enjoyed reading the book because it was a graphic novel and the photos were cool to look at.

This term so far has been great and I can't wait to be extended more in maths and reading.

Weekly Reflection ~ Term 1 Week 4

This week has been a busy week at school.

When we went to technology. I have Mr Robinson as my teacher. We have been working on 3D drawing and printing . I am creating a container for my hair ties and my bobbie pins.  This week we had to create a drawing or doc and add ideas for what we want in our Christmas cracker. I added ideas to my drawing.

This week for reading we have been doing activity's for the water tower. I had to chose a word and create a drawing on it. Also I had to chose how it was used in the book and to show my understanding off it. I like what I did and I think it was a cool idea from Mr Wood.

For Maths we have been creating graphs. Mr B have made us focus on line graph and the 10 day weather forecast in Greymouth. I chose to create a drawing and made the title fancy and did it well. We printed them off and placed them on the wall.

Weekly Reflection ~ (Term 1, Week 2 )

This term so far has been a great term. This year I am in T1 with Mr Wood. I think he is a great teacher. This week we have been focusing on maths.

This week I we had to make a graph to ask the class. I chose the question do you chew or suck on your chocolate. I made a google form and sent it to the class. Then I got the answers and created a pie graph. I liked doing this. My Next Step Learning would be how to create your own pie graph on paper because  this time I used an online site. Here is my pie chart.

We also had a challenge Mr Wood set us. We had to get are to rocket to get to the aliens and kill the before they get to earth. We could only use the number 1 time. I found it hard but in the end I completed it. I am proud of myself for not giving  up even when it was hard.

I have also been working on fractions. I can do fractions but in the test we did I found out I need to work on how to add and subtract with different denominates. I work on some maths buddy tasks and got Mr Wood to help me as well. I think it was hard at first but then I got the hang of it.

For some fun maths to start the term we had to do our names in block letters and work out the area and perimeter of our names. I worked out for the area to break it into squares. Then Mr Wood said the squares were 7mm so I had to take .3 of. I had to use percentages and division to help me work out the answer. I like my art and I think it is cool.
